EcoVolt MBRLagunitas Brewing Company has cut its water footprint by 40 percent after installing Cambrian Innovation’s EcoVolt Membrane Bioreactor (MBR), a polishing process that removes more than 99 percent of pollutants and solids, enabling water reuse on site.

The craft brewery is Cambrian’s first EcoVolt MBR customer.

The EcoVolt MBR was designed specifically to serve the food and beverage industries. The containerized system leverages new aeration technology with proprietary automation, resulting in what the company calls “the most energy efficient design on the market.”

The EcoVolt MBR also seamlessly integrates with Cambrian’s EcoVolt Reactor, eliminating the extensive energy typically required for water reuse. The systems can be stacked for space-efficiency, remotely controlled and flexibly expanded.

For breweries, wineries and other producers with a low volume or concentration of wastewater, the EcoVolt MBR is a highly efficient stand-alone water treatment system that cleans water for onsite reuse or sewer discharge. When coupled with the bioelectrically enhanced EcoVolt Reactor, the net result is water reuse at a fraction of the energy demand of existing systems.

Lagunitas purchased the EcoVolt MBR to integrate with its existing EcoVolt Reactor installation.

Leon Sharyon, CFO of Lagunitas Brewing, says the company was “throwing away money by trucking wastewater to a treatment facility. The EcoVolt Reactor helped us slash our utility costs by capturing the energy in our wastewater and treating water onsite.”
