Planners are attempting to deal with an apartment building boom in Sydney. In an effort to encourage energy efficiency, the city is providing information. In 2013, Sydney ran the 30-building Smart Green Apartments program, according to Huffington Post. The program was able to cut energy and water use by 30 percent and 25 percent, respectively. Energy-related steps were use of LEDs, light sensors in common areas and upgraded fans and other equipment. An annual average of $90,000 was saved.

Now, the NSW government is reviewing environmental targets for the BASIX requirements for new buildings. A bill also is under consideration to require attention to building maintenance issues which, if not addressed, can be costly and reduce efficiency. The author also recommends making it mandatory to include building performance benchmarks on sale or lease agreements.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) have announced an agreement to construct four to 10 large photovoltaic projects. The funding commitment by the organizations is $350 million.
