BioHiTech Expands Commercial Food Waste Management

Eco-Safe DigesterBioHiTech Global now has a presence in Europe and has formed a subsidiary, BioHiTech Europe, to further the global expansion of the company’s commercial food waste management system.

BioHiTech America, the company’s first subsidiary, has been helping businesses divert food waste from landfills for about eight years in more than 300 locations across the globe. Headquartered in London, BioHiTech Europe will offer expanded sales and services in Europe.

According to the European Commission, about 100 million metric tons of food are wasted annually in Europe. The BioHiTech system diverts food from landfills and also gives consumers the data they need to make decisions that will lead to the prevention of food waste from the start.

BioHiTech’s on-site Eco-Safe Digester converts food waste into grey-water and transports it through standard sewer lines. During the digestion process, the digester weighs each increment of waste and allows users to quantify its type and origin, simultaneously transmitting this data to the BioHiTech Cloud on a real-time basis.

BioHiTech Europe will be led by president Alex Giacchetti. He says the company is currently attempting to sell its products to a number of prestigious London hotels, leading UK shopping centers and some of the country’s largest facilities management companies.

Last month the US government set the first-ever national food waste reduction goal, calling for a 50 percent reduction by 2030, which was backed by food retailers and agriculture companies including Kellogg, Sodexo, Wegmans Food Markets and Albertsons.
