Global Environmental Services’ electronics recycling R2 certification has been suspended following reports that GES operated an illegal dump, using a bulldozer to bury CRTs and other electronic equipment near its facility in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Kentucky waste management inspectors said they received several photos showing e-waste being dumped at the site near GES, which specializes in recycling electronic appliance parts, the Georgetown News-Graphic reports.
GES did not respond to a request for comment.
SERI, which manages the R2 recycling standard, says the photos surfaced a week after an R2 audit of the facility. “Such bizarre, outrageous, illegal, and unethical behavior is hard to fathom and will not be tolerated by SERI or the company’s certification body, Orion Registrar,” SERI said in a statement.
Orion suspended the facility’s R2 certification after the photos and reports surfaced. SERI said it “absolutely supports this action.”
