McDonald's logoMcDonald’s centrally purchased packaging in Europe is 100 percent sustainably sourced, reports Supply Management.

This includes cartons, cups, bags, napkins and tray liners, all made with wood fiber from recycled sources or forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification.

McDonald’s says this sustainable packaging achievement applies to packaging bought centrally for 38 European countries, including the UK. It doesn’t apply to some locally sourced items.

The restaurant chain set the sustainable packaging target in December 2011.

According to Supply Management, McDonald’s uses 170,000 metric tons of wood fiber annually in its packaging across Europe; 90 percent of this packaging comes from renewable sources.

Earlier this year McDonald’s pledged to end deforestation across the company’s global supply chain.
