green_homeConstruction of energy efficient homes cuts costs by both reducing energy expenditures and enables the builder or buyer to qualify for tax incentives, according to a story at The Independent Record in Helena, MT.

The story focuses on Habitat for Humanity. The group built a 768 square-foot home in Helena last year that had a total heating bill of $100. The average annual residential bill is eight times that amount.

Energy efficiency in home construction, the piece says, depends on building codes, using construction principles and choosing options that make sense in a particular situation. Foam insulation in attic heating duct systems is a particular effective measure, the story said.

Homes also can generate their own energy. Last month, Royalpark Homes became the first home building to install residential solar photovoltaics and battery storage systems in homes being built at Simcoe Shores, a community in Barrie, Ontario.
