Energy Efficiency for All has released a report finding that a few steps can move New York City a long way towards achieving Mayor Bill de Blasio’s goal of cutting gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
The New York Times suggests that a big problem is that steam heat in buildings is set to keep the apartment farthest away warm. This overheats apartments closer to the boilers. Residents open their windows to let in the cold.
This, of course, is a monumental waste – which could be eliminated by simply installing an orifice plate in each radiator enabling tenants to control their own heat. Energy Efficiency for All is associated with the Natural Resources Defense Council and the consulting firm of Steven Winter Associates.
Tupelo, MS, is a fraction of the size of The Big Apple, but it also is looking to cut energy use. Northeast Mississippi Daily reports that the city will begin saving at least $140,000 annually for the next two decades by upgrading the lighting at the athletic fields, parks and government buildings. The upgrades and savings are the result of a $5.3 million energy savings contract with Schneider Electric.
