Screening Tool Reduces Chemical Compliance Burden by 66%

BOMcheck ELBOMcheck’s substance declarations and conflict minerals web database has published a new screening tool for the electrotechnical industry that reduces the time and cost of Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) compliance by 66 percent.

BOMcheck is a centralized database that helps companies manage supply chain compliance with the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), REACH and other substance regulations around the world. The system works with the IEC 62474 materials declaration standard to implement European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) “Guidance on Requirements for Substances in Articles” recommendations for the electrotechnical industry.

Article 33 of the REACH Regulation requires companies that supply products containing more than 0.1 percent by weight of any REACH Candidate List Substance to provide their customers with “sufficient information, available to the supplier, to allow safe use of the article including, as a minimum, the name of that substance.”

The number of substances of very high concern (SVHC) on the UK’s REACH Candidate List Substances increased to 163 in June.

BOMcheck’s REACH Candidate List screening helps companies reduce compliance time and costs by screening out 95 substances that are not normally found in electrotechnical industry parts and materials. Electrotechnical companies can use the screening to reduce the number of REACH Candidate List substances they need to investigate from 163 down to 68.

The BOMcheck regulatory compliance declaration tool builds on this by providing detailed chemicals guidance for each REACH Candidate List substance.

BOMcheck is an industry collaboration led by Philips, Siemens, General Electric, Osram, Sony Mobile, Schneider Electric, Toshiba, Agfa, Texas Instruments and TE Connectivity.
