Southside Elementary School in Shelbyville, KY has become the 300th school building in the state to receive the Energy Star designation, according to the Northern Kentucky Tribune.
The announcement was made by The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) and the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). Southside’s energy use intensity (EUI) is 26.4. The district’s EUI has dropped from 71.6 in 2010 to 44.6 this year. The state average is 57.6, which is down from 65.4 five years ago.
The Shelby County School District has saved almost $2.2 million due to energy efficiency initiatives since 2010. KSBA says that the state has saved more than $68 million since 2010, according to the story.
Last month, Toyota said that its plant in Georgetown, KY will begin using bioenergy recovered from methane at the Central Kentucky landfill, which is about six-and-a-half miles away. About 1 MW per hour of energy will be generated.
