JAC Motors Pioneers First Use of VOC-Free Automobile Powder Coating

JAC Motors powder coating JAC Motors has pioneered the first use of AkzoNobel’s volatile organic compound (VOC)-free powder technology for automotive body coatings. The automaker is using AkzoNobel’s Interpon powder technology to coat SLX truck bodies at its site in Mengcheng, China.

Chinese automakers have been looking for ways to meet new coatings standards, according to Wenping Xing, technical director of JAC Motors. Powder coatings can help meet those requirements.

“Powder coatings have advantages such as high utility rate and zero wastage, making them a sustainable solution of choice for body coatings,” Xing says.

The two companies discussed the technology at an industry forum in Shanghai on December 9, organized by the Coating Division of the China Surface Engineering Association. The Association’s Secretary General, Wailing Wu, has called for all industry-related companies to take action to put cleaner manufacturing into practice.

JAC Motors is currently planning a second powder coating line.

Earlier this year, Axalta Coating Systems launched two low-VOC vehicle coatings in China.

  1. Good news however, essentially all powder coatings are VOC free and have been since the 1960’s. Also powder coatings have been applied to automotive bodies since at least 1982 (Chevy S-10’s) and body primer surfacers. At the height of powder use in the 1990’s about 20 automotive plants were using powder as a body coat including BMW who used it as a final clear topcoat on their 5 and 7 series cars.
