Kellogg has announced new science-based emissions targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its operations 65 percent and help its suppliers reduce their emissions 50 percent by 2050 against a 2015 baseline.
Science Based Targets is a joint initiative by CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and WWF intended to increase corporate ambition on climate action by changing the conversation about GHG emissions reduction target setting and creating an expectation that companies will set targets consistent with the level of decarbonization required by science to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial temperatures.
Kellogg is focusing on upstream agriculture emissions and manufacturing in its new targets because these two areas are the largest sources of emissions in the company’s supply chain. The company has already reduced GHG emissions from its manufacturing facilities by approximately 12 percent since 2008.
The new targets are an extension of Kellogg’s 2020 global sustainability goals set in August 2014, when the organization announced commitments to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its own operations, increase the use of low carbon energy and require all key suppliers to measure and publicly disclose their own emissions and reduction targets.
Kellogg has committed to supporting 15,000 smallholder growers by 2020 to increase adoption of Climate Smart Agriculture.
