Philips, Cisco, Alliander Bringing Smart Lighting to Amsterdam

shutterstock_189863267Philips, Cisco and Alliander, a Dutch utility, are teaming on a smart lighting project in Amsterdam – which could the first of many.

LEDs Magazine reports that the companies, working with a Amsterdam Smart City, telecommunications company KPN and others installed controlled lighting and public WiFi at Hoekenrodeplein, a shopping area.  The system was turned on earlier this month.

The story says that other projects may follow from the trio. They created the Intelligent Lighting Institute at Eindhoven University of Technology in October 2012 to develop the technology. The resulting Smart Lights in Metropolitan Areas is targeting Rotterdam and Eindhoven in addition to Amsterdam.

San Jose and Royal Philips are conducting a pilot test of 50 SmartPoles in San Jose. The poles will offer LED lighting and house LTE small cells.
