General Electric and French energy company EDF today began operation of the first ever combined-cycle power plant equipped with GE’s HA turbine, in Bouchain, France.
GE also says it has been recognized by Guinness World Records for powering the world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant based on an achieved efficiency rate of up to 62.22 percent at the Bouchain plant.
“Today we are making history with this power plant for the future,” said Steve Bolze, president and CEO of GE Power.
GE says the HA gas turbine is capable of reaching full power in less than 30 minutes. This paves the way for greater use of renewable energy by allowing partners to respond quickly to fluctuations in grid demand, integrate renewables onto the grid and adapt quickly to weather changes.
These advances support the Paris climate agreement, the companies say. At COP21 in Paris last December, 195 countries pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, placing more emphasis on cleaner electric power opportunities.
The Bouchain plant, which has a generating capability of more than 605 MW, also demonstrates GE’s Digital Power Plant capabilities, the company says. This includes the digital control system, real-time data and predictive insights for higher reliability and optimization.
Earlier this week GE and Italian utility company A2A Group said GE installed its Operations Optimization software suite at the utility’s Chivasso power plant in Northern Italy after the facility was reopened in November 2015, following GE’s hardware and software upgrades.
The companies said GE’s hardware and digital solutions helped the Chivasso power plant achieve a 65 megawatt per gas turbine minimum load level — the best in GE’s 9FA fleet — and enable load ramping at up to 50 MW per minute or two-and-a-half times the normal rate.
