Walmart and Alabama Power Teaming on Solar

Walmart Energy ManageWalmart and Alabama Power will build a 72 MW solar facility outside of LaFayette, AL.

The story at The LaFayette Sun reports that part of the deal will be that the retailer will buy and retire “the bulk of renewable energy credits generated by the solar powered system.” Walmart, the story says, aims to increase product and procurement of sustainable energy to 7 billion kWh by 2020. It hopes to operate entirely on renewable energy soon afterwards, the story says.

The story says that the Alabama Public Service Commission unanimously approved the project, which is set to be completed by December, 2017. The cost is estimated at $140 million.

In May, it was reported that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineering and Support Center in Huntsville, AL, the Army Office of Energy Initiatives and the Army Garrison have been working with SunPower Corp. to work out details and eventually build a solar facility on Redstone Arsenal.
