Black & Veatch, Schneider Building Microgrid for the Marines

Energy Manage Marine CorpsBlack & Veatch and Schneider Electric USA have joined forces to build a microgrid at the Marine Corps Station (MCAS) Miramar, which is in San Diego.

The microgrid will be designed to guarantee continuity of operations in the event of a grid failure. It could be scaled to manage the entire installation and will be used to moderate peak usage demands. The release says that the microgrid will use renewable resources, advanced smart grid control systems and demand response capabilities. The platform will power several facilities at the 12 kilovolt level during outages and will use landfill gas, solar and storage systems as part of its normal operations.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic, the Piedmont Natural Gas Company and Energy Services Group agreed last fall to work on a stream decentralization project at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
