ConstructionDive says that “the building will likely feature the energy-efficient features for which federal government buildings have become known.” The story says that the U.S. Energy Information Administration Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey found that government buildings used 23 percent less energy in 2012 than in 2003. Privately owned buildings reduced consumption by about half that percentage — 12 percent — during that period, the story says.

The DC government has adopted the Renewable Portfolio Standard Expansion Act of 2016. The act, according to the press release, will lead to the provisioning of solar power to 100,000 low-income households by 2032. This will lead to a 50 percent reduction in energy bills in those homes.
