Home furnishings giant Ikea and nonprofit Stop Wasting Food have joined the ranks of Champions 12.3, the coalition of nearly 40 CEOs, ministers and other leaders committed to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Target 12.3 on food waste. Food loss and waste amounts to economic losses of $940 billion per year, according to the coalition.

When the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015, Target 12.3 was created with a goal of cutting in half per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level, and reducing food losses along production and supply chains (including post-harvest losses) by 2030. Champions 12.3 is a group of executives who would champion the cause by:

  • Encouraging others to pursue efforts to reduce food loss and waste;
  • Quantifying food loss and waste and monitoring progress;
  • Pursuing strategies to reduce food loss and waste;
  • Raising awareness and celebrating success;
  • Leading by example.

Ikea’s Michael La Cour, managing director of Ikea Food Services AB, is joining the group, along with Selina Juul, founder of Stop Wasting Food. La Cour spearheads Ikea’s Food Is Precious initiative to halve food waste from Ikea’s food operations by August 2020. By May of this year, over 20 percent of all Ikea stores had begun implementing the food waste reduction system.

In September, Champions 12.3 will release SDG Target 12.3 on Food Loss and Waste: 2017 Progress Report. The coalition’s latest report, The Business Case for Reducing Food Loss and Waste can be read here.
