Canada’s federal government is offering incentives to manufacturers if they scale back their energy use.
Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Jim Carr, has asked all industries to cut their energy intensity 10% over the next five years. Carr said those successful in meeting or exceeding the 10% cut will be formally recognized as Energy Star Achievers.
According to cbc.ca, Carr said the incentives are obvious. Companies will have greater efficiency, enhanced competitiveness, improved productivity and environmental performance and a more sustainable operation.
Carr said the challenge is a followup to this past summer’s launch of the Energy Star for Industry program, designed “to help industrial manufacturing facilities to reduce their energy intensity and related costs.”
Industrial manufacturing is the most energy-intensive sector of the economy, producing more than one-third of Canada’s greenhouse gases.
Other Initiatives
Canada has undertaken other, recent energy saving initiatives as well. In July, Bell, Canada’s largest communications company, announced it will use smart energy management solutions (EMS) to help Canadian businesses transform the way they manage their energy usage. The current initiative aims to broaden Bell’s EMS portfolio by offering energy management “as a service” to simplify the process of managing complex systems. Bell will partner with Gridpoint for implementation of the EMS.
