By focusing investments on energy conservation and more efficient use of space, Symantec has achieved a 32% reduction in GHG emissions in just three years, the company says. Its Mountain View headquarters now has a zero-carbon electricity contract and is working to further reduce emissions by choosing cleaner sources of energy to power offices, labs and data centers.
In 2016, Symantec set a goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 30% by 2025. After having surpassed the goal seven years early, the company has set a new goal of reducing GHG emissions by an additional 30% by 2033.
Symantec is one of the twenty-one technology companies that have joined the Step Up Declaration, a new alliance dedicated to “harnessing the power of emerging technologies and the fourth industrial revolution” to ensure a climate turning point by 2020.
“As part of our commitment to climate action, we focused efforts around energy efficiency in our buildings, as electricity use in our data centers, labs and offices account for more than 90% of these emissions,” according to the Symantec Corporate Responsibility blog. “Buildings account for around 40% of global energy consumption, producing over a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.”
