Stora Enso RFIDStora Enso has introduced new paper-based radio frequency identification (RFID) tag technology called Eco. The Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer says these sustainable RFID tags provide a plastic-free and recyclable solution for packaging authentication.

The company developed technology in order to produce the tags on 100% fiber-based paper labels. Unlike traditional plastic tags, the Eco technology ones result in lower carbon footprints for B2B and B2C companies, according to Stora Enso.

Also, by integrating the RFID into a paper label, the manufacturing process can become more scalable and cost-effective without affecting performance or reliability, the company says.

“The Eco tag can be recycled in an environmentally friendly way together with paper and board materials,” Stora Enso’s description says. “Moreover, it offers high conductivity at a lower cost compared with graphene or silver printed antennas.”

RFID is wireless and can identify several hundred items at high speeds without line-of-sight interaction. In addition, the technology allows communication between the brand owner and an end-user through a near field communication (NFC) smartphone.

Stora Enso’s Intelligent Packaging solution puts RFID, UHF, and NFC tags on packages or individual items to help businesses gain greater inventory accuracy, reliability, and efficiencies across their global supply chains. Intelligent Packaging uses a cloud-based track-and-trace solution that runs on the Microsoft Azure platform.

The Eco technology is available for use in multiple ongoing projects across multiple sectors, according to the company.

“Eco creates a truly sustainable option for our customers and consumers, accelerating the use of smart technology in Stora Enso’s renewable solutions,” says Martin Ros, the head of Stora Enso Intelligent Packaging. He added that the technology is unique because the recyclable and plastic-layer-free option for RFID end-users enables a digital and sustainable packaging infrastructure.

Headquartered in Helsinki, Stora Enso has approximately 6,000 employees in more than 30 countries. Last year the company’s sales were over $11 billion.
