When it comes to sustainable packaging goals among major brand owners and retailers, more companies have made commitments relating to responsible fiber sourcing than any other area; while much has been made of recent commitments from major brands to improve the recyclability of their packaging, more companies have specific goals regarding responsible sourcing or the amount of recycled content in their packaging, according to a recent study from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.

The Goals Database looked at publicly-stated goals and commitments from major companies and found that 86% are addressing sustainable packaging in some way, writes Packaging Digest. About 55% have a commitment to improving the recyclability of their packaging, while 62% have stated goals or priorities regarding the use of recycled material in their packaging or responsible sourcing.

Other stated goals included the use of bio-based or renewable materials, eliminating unfavorable materials, improving recovery infrastructure, increasing recycling, and material efficiency.

The sustainable packaging market is expected to reach $400 million by 2024, according to a recent report by Zion Market Research.
