Cola-Cola Great Britain is bringing reverse vending machines back to Merlin Entertainments sites following a successful trial initiative last summer. This time, the beverage company has placed 23 machines across local attractions.
The way the machines work is that each bottle recycled delivers a 50%-off voucher for one of Merlin’s amusement park locations. Last year’s pilot began in late July and ran through the end of August.
Machines available this summer are set to be operational through October 17 at Alton Towers Resort, Thorpe Park Resort, Chessington World of Adventures Resort, and Legoland Windsor Resort. All other participating attractions have the machines until March 31, 2020, the beverage company noted.
“Recycling doesn’t need to be boring,” said Kris Robbens, marketing director at Coca-Cola Great Britain and Ireland. “We want to reward and recognize people for doing the right thing and make it easier to recycle on the go.”
In addition to the machines, Coca-Cola Great Britain is adding a “recycle me” message to all of their bottle tops. Recently the company also announced that they are transitioning all of their Glaceau Smartwater bottles to 100% rPET this year. This move is expected to save 3,100 metric tons of virgin plastic annually.
“We’re continuing to work with local re-processors to double the amount of recycled PET used in all of our plastic bottles — across 20 brands — to at least 50%,” the company said.
