Henkel’s Packaging and Consumer Goods Division introduced Epix technology, a portfolio of materials and chemistries that the company says improves paper packaging performance while also maintaining recyclability.
The new patented technology can be applied to sustainable packaging as well as food service products, Henkel says.
“Disposable, on-the-go products are popular with consumers especially if they can be recycled. Epix technology enables recycling of many food service items — paper straws, food trays, and paper cups,” the company said. “Epix improves water resistance for paper straws and provides higher temperature resistance for double-walled paper cups for coffee and tea.”
E-commerce is another application for the technology.
“Instead of oversized containers and envelopes with packing materials, Epix technology enhances paper mailers and delivers flexible, form fitting and recyclable packaging options,” the company said. Consumers receiving e-commerce packages with the tech can put it right into the recycling bin.
Amazon is currently deploying the Epix sustainable packaging technology in selected markets, according to Henkel. This package created with the technology recently received the “widely recycled” classification and will soon carry the How2Recycle label, the company added.
