Product Announcement: 3M Shipping Material Reduces Waste by 50%, Company Says

(Credit: 3M)

Cardboard boxes take up a lot of space, and they frequently aren’t available in the exact size of the product being shipped. Materials company 3M says it has solved that problem with its new Flex & Seal Shipping Roll, which it claims cuts down on shipping waste and shipping space by as much as 50% when compared to cardboard boxes.

To use, a shipper simply cuts the Scotch Flex & Seal Shipping Roll to size, folds it over and presses to securely seal. No filler or tape are needed, 3M says.

The company previewed the product at the Prosper Show, a convention of Amazon’s top sellers in Las Vegas, before launching it on Amazon and Ebay earlier this year. It is now available at brick-and-mortar stores.

The product is made with the same material as plastic bags, so it can be recycled at retail stores that have a plastic bag recycling program, but it can’t be tossed into at-home recycling bins. Compared with cardboard boxes, which can be more easily recycled by consumers, this is a problem that the company recognizes and is working on how to change the construction of the materials to make it easier to recycle at home (via Fast Company).

On the other hand, because more products packaged with Flex & Seal can fit in a truck, it potentially makes the supply chain more efficient and cuts down on emissions.

Fast Company says 3M is exploring partnerships with major retailers including Walmart and Target who are competing with Amazon on speed of shipping.
