Deep Dive On New York’s Energy Storage Opportunity

With high electricity costs and the emergence of new incentive programs, including the state’s new Valuing Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) program, New York’s commercial and industrial (C&I) energy consumers face a strong business case for on-site energy storage and solar-plus-storage.

However, amid all of these potential value streams, many C&I energy consumers are still unclear on whether energy storage is a good fit for their facilities.

In this live webinar, speakers from Energy + Environmental Economics (E3), an energy consulting firm that supported the development of New York’s energy storage policies, and energy solution provider Enel X North America will walk through the economics behind New York’s energy storage opportunity and explain what goes into a successful project.

Nick Lombardi
Senior Manager of Business Development
Enel X

Nick is responsible for developing Enel X’s DER customer offerings in New York and New Jersey. In 2018 and 2019 Nick has been primarily focused on planning and launching Enel X’s financed solar-plus-storage services in New York, including the Hybrid PPA (hPPA) for behind-the-meter projects and front-of-the-meter projects generating VDER credits.

Prior to joining Enel X, Nick was the Principal of oio energy, a DER project developer and consultant focusing on the emerging DER space in New York enabled by the state’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceedings. Nick has worked with a wide variety of DER startups, including Demand Energy, GridMarket, BlocPower, and Sparkfund. He was a key contributor to developing the microgrid at Marcus Garvey Village in Brooklyn, the NYCEEC solar loan for New York City co-ops and condos, the solar-plus-storage installation that powered the Enel eVillage at the 2017 Formula E race in Red Hook, and a variety of solar + sub-metering projects in co-ops and condos in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx.

Nick got his start in energy in 2005 when he managed the planning and implementation of the Sustainable Design Guidelines for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Lower Manhattan. In 2013 he joined Conservation Services Group (CSG, now CLEAResult) to design and run pilot projects in residential and multifamily energy efficiency programs for NYSERDA, and to launch a new consulting unit focused on energy saving projects in multifamily buildings. Nick left CSG in 2015 to take on his own clients. He is a LEED AP, and he holds a B.A. in International Relations from Trinity College and a M.S. in Real Estate Finance from NYU.

Jon Carbajal

Enel X

Jon Carbajal manages the technical sales in eastern North America of Enel X’s energy storage product offering. He oversees the techno-economic modeling and hardware selection process to maximize customers’ value unique to their needs. He has over 10 years of power sector experience focused on building Distributed Energy Resources including 12 MW of PV and dozens of microgrids. Previously, Jon was a Product Solutions Manager at Younicos developing their commercial battery solution. While at the Earth Institute, he provided long-term master power plans to several Asian and African governments guiding multi-billion dollar power investments. Jon received a B.S./M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University and his Sustainability Management MS from Columbia University.

Stefanie Tanenhaus
Senior Consultant
Energy and Environmental Economics (E3)

Stefanie Tanenhaus is a Senior Consultant at Energy and Environmental Economics (E3) where she focuses on distributed and system-wide resource planning and economic evaluation. On recent E3 projects, she has conducted economic modeling to support large-scale energy storage deployment in New York and analyzed the market value of distributed energy storage projects in California. She also supports the California Public Utilities Commission’s statewide integrated resource planning process. Previously, she helped develop Pacific Gas & Electric’s strategy and positions on renewable energy policies and supported the successful design and implementation of California’s climate policies. Ms. Tanenhaus received an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Atmosphere and Energy) from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis.
