Exelon, Anbaric Build Microgrids in New York

Exelon is partnering with Anbaric to create a series of microgrids in the state of New York. The collaboration will be dedicated to establishing microgrids ranging from 10-200 MW at strategic locations throughout the state to secure reliability, reduce costs and improve the efficiency of the surrounding grid.

The alliance is currently identifying customers for its plans to develop five large microgrids at sites in Long Island, New York City, and upstate New York. Customers could include skyscrapers, hospitals, universities, industrial businesses or municipalities. The alliance will tailor its efforts around the state’s Reforming the Energy Vision program.

Exelon says the partnership gives it an opportunity to get an early foothold in the emerging microgrids market, building on its existing expertise in distributed generation and its wires business.

Anbaric develops High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission projects. In the microgrid arena, Anbaric was co-founder of Viridity Energy, which makes controls for microgrids.

New York is currently accepting proposals for its $40 million competition, NY Prize, for microgrids that meet energy and resiliency needs of local communities.
