AkzoNobel’s flooring additives Elotex FL2280 and FL2200 are redispersible polymer powders (RPPs) developed for dry mix mortars and designed for use in indoor applications that require a very low volatile organic compound level. These additives help support the construction industry’s efforts to improve the indoor air quality of residential and industrial buildings.

Elotex FL2280 and FL2200 allow customers to formulate dry mortar flooring products that comply with environmental requirements such as EMICODE EC1 PLUS, and support building projects that meet international green building standards like LEED and BREEAM.

The benefits that Elotex FL2280 and FL2200 provide include being formaldehyde-free RPP with extremely low VOC emissions, having excellent leveling effects and high surface abrasion resistance, good rheology and workability, superior surface appearance, and good compatibility to differing qualities of other formulation ingredients, AkzoNobel says.

These additives enable the formulation of flooring products with technical advantages such as defect-free surfaces so customers can enter new application fields and benefit from market trends like decorative and design floors, where the requirements for aesthetics are high. As low-VOC redispersible polymer powders developed for indoor use, Elotex FL2280 and FL2200 also improve indoor air quality and significantly reduce construction workers’ exposure to organic emissions, the company says.

Both products earned the AkzoNobel classification of “eco-premium solution with downstream benefits,” a label for products that offer an improvement in sustainability measured via a quantitative analysis or a qualitative assessment of performance in seven categories: energy efficiency, use of natural resources or raw materials, land use, emissions and waste, risks, toxicity, and health and wellbeing.

The products’ introduction to the market has resulted in a strong increase in demand and overall market share in flooring applications for building and construction, according to the company. AkzoNobel analysis also demonstrates that use of Elotex FL2280 in cementitious self-leveling compound formulations reduces the total VOC content by 50% compared to a standard polymer powder.
