Clean & Clear Acne Triple Clear Bubble Foam Cleanser with Natrasurf
What the Judges Said…
“A holistic approach that all manufacturers should consider. This innovation may inspire other industry developments by demonstrating that the technology can be used to deliver more environmentally sound products.”
The Clean & Clear Acne Triple Clear Bubble Foam Cleanser is a foaming acne cleanser in Johnson & Johnson’s Earthwards portfolio recognizing products that have multiple sustainability attributes. The cleanser contains patented Natrasurf (PS-111), a renewable potato starch ester developed by Johnson & Johnson. This ingredient makes the product non-penetrating and non-irritating to skin and also minimizes environmental impact, the company says.
The cleanser product is the first to use Natrasurf, which Johnson & Johnson reported required yearlong clinical studies of acne skin. Natrasurf is made from naturally occurring, highly renewable potato starch. It is synthesized via low-energy esterification in an aqueous process that is free of organic solvents and produces no waste stream, according to the company.
Supplied as a spray-dried powder, PS-111 is up to 70% more concentrated than traditional surfactants supplied as aqueous solutions, which helps reduce the fuel consumption and emissions associated with shipping the product. In addition, PS-111 powder is self-preserving due to its low water activity, eliminating the need to add preservative chemicals to the ingredient for shipping and storage, the company says.
PS-111 is readily biodegradable according to OECD 301 B, and it scored 98 out of 100 on Johnson & Johnson’s Global Aquatic Ingredient Assessment scale, which is a metric for environmental safety based on persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity data. Natrasurf was awarded the 2017 Johnson Medal Award, which recognizes innovation in science and is one of the highest awards given at the company.
Most surfactants are petroleum-based whereas this cleanser is naturally derived, renewable, and biodegradable, the company says. In addition, the product also reduced primary packaging by 31% compared to previous Clean & Clear foaming products, and uses a propellant-free, metal-free pump.
